Key Features of an Inclusive School

Education White Paper 6 of 2001 (Department of Education)
Guidelines from EWP6 Inclusive schools:
  • Welcome all learners and celebrate diversity;
  • Are flagship schools that demonstrate best practice in inclusive education;
  • Ensure that the curriculum is accessible to all learners through the way in which they teach and allow learners to learn;
  • Provide support to all learners in a multitude of creative ways without necessarily referring them elsewhere;
  • Promote teamwork amongst teachers and between teachers and parents;
  • Nurture relationships with other schools and with all members of the community and send a message of tolerance, respect and acceptance towards all;
  • Advocate for all learners who are at risk of becoming marginalised, including learners with disabilities, chronic illness, learning difficulties and social, emotional and behaviour problems;
  • Take every possible measure to ensure that the school is physically accessible, safe and equipped with the necessary equipment that learners might need;
  • Demonstrate how all children of school-going age can attend their local school and achieve their full potential
